On October 21, 2026, the School of Information and Communication Engineering (SICE) at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) hosted an engaging English Frontier Lecture titled Design of Wideband RF Switch ICs: Fundamentals and Recent Advances. Held in research building, the academic session was led by Prof. WANG Yong, a National High-Level Young Talent and recognized industry expert. The event offered priority registration to CSC scholarship students, drawing a diverse, international audience of aspiring engineers and researchers.

During the comprehensive presentation, Prof. WANG guided attendees through the critical role of RF switches in modern and future RF systems. He detailed how trends toward multiband and multimode operations demand wider bandwidths, lower insertion loss, high linearity, and high isolation in modern switch design. The lecture broke down core fundamentals, exploring device models, metric tradeoffs between insertion loss and isolation, and basic topology classifications such as reflective versus absorptive states.

Highlighting cutting-edge research, Prof. WANG showcased six recent advances in wideband RF Switch ICs that directly address the scaling challenges of multi-throw architectures. Key designs included a DC-30 GHz GaAs SPDT utilizing a Reconfigurable Filter Network (RFN) to reuse inactive-path capacitance, alongside highly integrated DC-18 GHz SP3T, SP6T, and SP10T models. He explained how innovative techniques, such as reconfigurable pole-to-throw networks (RPTN), actively absorb and bypass inactive-group capacitance across different operating bands. Furthermore, Prof. WANG demonstrated how symmetrical routing aligns path impedances to overcome traditional parasitic limitations and minimize common-node loading in high-throw designs. The presentation also featured a highly complex DC-12 GHz 4x8 Switch Matrix utilizing a common-highway architecture with double-π inter-stage matching to suppress leakage, as well as a versatile X-Band Reconfigurable 1:2 Power Divider Switch. Together, these advanced topologies illustrate how parasitic reuse and intelligent routing control can achieve continuous wideband coverage without compromising insertion loss or port isolation.

The session concluded with an outlook on the future of reconfigurable RF networks. Prof. WANG emphasized four primary research directions: advancing wideband GaN switching at higher power levels, developing scalable routing for multiport excitation, implementing digitally assisted self-calibration, and co-designing RF front-ends with antenna networks.

Following the academic insights and a Q&A session, the attendees gathered with Prof. WANG for a commemorative group photo, marking the success of this international knowledge-sharing initiative at UESTC's School of Information and Communication Engineering.
